United Nations Society Constitution - 11 September, 2005

1) The official name of the club shall be the “University of Toronto United Nations Society.”  The short name of the club shall be the “UN Society.”

2) The purpose of the UN Society shall be to:
I. Train, prepare and send student delegates to inter-collegiate model United Nations conferences, and
II. Promote knowledge of the United Nations on campus.

3) Membership is open to all students, staff, faculty and alumni of the University of Toronto. There is a membership fee, from which staff, faculty, and alumni are exempt.

4) The elected positions of the UN Society executive are president, treasurer, training director, conferences director, communications director, and secretary.
I. All executive positions, with the exception of secretary, are open to all student members who have held a membership for a minimum of 30 days.
II. The position of secretary is to be held by a member of the UN Society in their first academic year at the University of Toronto.

5) The election of all executive positions, with the exception of secretary, will be held prior to the final day of classes of every academic year. The election of the position of secretary will be held on or before the fourth general meeting of each year.
I. All members are eligible to vote for all positions, with the exception of the position of secretary.
II. Voting for the position of secretary is restricted to first year student members.
III. In the event of a vacancy within the executive, a by-election shall be held as soon as is feasible.
IV. Two weeks notice will be given to all members prior to the election of any executive position.
V.    The communications director must receive proxy votes for any election 24 hours in advance of the election.
VI. The winner of an election will be the candidate receiving a simple majority of votes cast.
 VII. In the event that no candidate receives a majority, a run-off is to take place immediately between the two candidates receiving the most votes in the first voting round.

6) There shall be a general meeting every week during the academic year with the exception of the months of December, April and during the summer semester.

7) Amendments to this constitution require the approval of a two-thirds majority of all members of the UN Society. Any proposed amendment must be circulated to all members of the UN Society two weeks prior to voting.
